Nelsan Ellis, who played fan favorite Lafayette on the HBO vampire series True Blood for seven seasons, died Saturday at age 39 from complications from heart failure.
Ellis’s Lafayette was a cook at a diner who dealt drug-like vampire blood on the side. His often scene-stealing performance endeared him to fans from the star of the show’s run in 2008. Lafayette is killed off at the beginning of the second book in the series by Charlaine Harris, on which the show is based, but the HBO showrunners kept him around until the final season because viewers loved him so much (and because he is responsible for, arguably, one of the best scenes in TV history).
When the news broke on Saturday Ellis’s True Blood co-stars paid tribute. Stephen Moyer, Anna Paquin, Deborah Ann Woll, Joe Manganiello, Kristin Bauer van Straten, and more stars shared their heartbroken messages on social media. Paquin, who played the show’s protagonist Sookie Stackhouse tweeted that it was an “utter privilege” to work alongside Ellis. Their co-stars also spoke to Ellis’s talent, charm, and “beautiful soul.”
Kevin Alejandro, who played Lafayette’s witchy boyfriend Jesus on the show, tweeted that he felt “heartbroken.
Octavia Spencer, who starred with Ellis in The Help, told the story of how the two of them first met on Instagram: “Needless to say he was gorgeous, sexy. But his talent had me speechless. We became instant friends after that.”
