During the coronavirus pandemic, major movie studios are moving “Onward.”
The Disney and Pixar animated film will be the latest recent theatrical release to stream early due to the shuttering of major chains such as AMC and Regal Cinemas.
Disney said Friday that “Onward,” which premiered just two weeks ago, will be available for purchase at 8 p.m. ET on services such as Movies Anywhere, Amazon and iTunes for $19.99.
The movie, about two teen elves who go on a magical quest to bring back their late father, will then hit Disney+ on April 3.
“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” director Dick Scanlon said in a statement.
During its abbreviated run, “Onward” only managed about $61 million at the domestic box office
The House of Mouse is jumping on the new trend of releasing films that would otherwise still be in theaters on streaming services early. Universal also dropped three of its major titles — “The Invisible Man,” “The Hunt” and “Emma” — for rent digitally ($19.99) on Friday. All of those opened theatrically in the past two weeks. The studio’s upcoming “Trolls World Tour” will hit digital-renting platforms on April 10, the same day it was due to hit theaters.
