Kaitlynn Carter is opening up about her relationships.
The "Hills" star, who had a public summer romance with Miley Cyrus following her split from ex-husband Brody Jenner, penned a power essay for Elle magazine about sexuality, getting candid about her evolving preferences and the pressure to label herself.
"I know I’m not alone in feeling pressure to explain or define myself in one way or another," Carter wrote.
She said "publicly defining one’s identity is not for the faint of heart," mentioning the reaction Mark Ronson received when he said in passing he identified as sapiosexual, which the Montclair State University's LGBTQ Center describes as a person who "is emotionally, romantically, sexually, affectionately, or relationally attracted to intelligence and its use."
""Why are we so hellbent on defining each variation of sexuality, anyway?" Carter mused. "We’ve become a society of labels, even as we claim to be more open-minded than ever."
The businesswoman also wrote about her relationships, admitting that "this past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her."
"As my friend and I spent that August traveling through Europe together and trying to move past our respective break-ups, my first and only romance with a woman was born," Carter wrote.
(Carter's relationship with Cyrus blossomed following the pop star's split from Liam Hemsworth. She's since moved on to Cody Simpson.)
She continued: "Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends, but until that trip it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense."
Cyrus was spotted kissing Carter during an Italian vacation, following the dissolution of Jenner and Carter's six-year relationship.
Carter said she will "remain eternally grateful to my most recent relationship for opening my eyes to this unexplored part of myself, and for inspiring a new level of self-discovery and wonder at all the possibilities of life."
She called it a "profound journey of self-discovery," adding, "For the first time, I listened to myself, forgot about the 'norm,' and lived."
Carter shared additional details about her marriage to Jenner.
Carter, whose wedding with Jenner was in June 2018, said she was "drawn to his spirit."
However, "after years of constant 'excitement,' we found we’d done as much growing apart as we’d done growing up," she wrote. "I began to spend a lot of time traveling on my own or with friends, quietly mourning what I knew in my heart would soon be the end of my marriage."
